How do I convert a web page to Markdown?
Enter the page's address on the From URL tab and press Convert to Markdown. The tool fetches the public page, removes the menus and footer, and returns Markdown you can copy or download as a .md file. If you already have the HTML, use the Paste HTML tab instead.
How do I convert HTML to Markdown for ChatGPT or Claude?
Convert the page here, then paste the Markdown into your prompt. Markdown keeps headings, lists, links and tables but drops the tags, scripts and class names, so it takes up far less of the context window. The token figure is an estimate of about four characters per token for English text, so treat it as a guide, since each model counts a little differently.
Why convert HTML to Markdown for AI?
Raw HTML is mostly markup the model has to read past: tags, attributes, scripts and styling. Markdown keeps only the structure that carries meaning, so the same content is much shorter and easier to follow. Does HTML to Markdown keep tables, links and images?
Tables, links, headings, lists, bold and italic text and code blocks are kept. Links stay by default and can be switched off. Images are left out by default to save space, and turning on Include images adds them as Markdown image links with their alt text.
What is the difference between HTML and Markdown?
HTML describes a page for a browser, with a tag for every element and attributes for styling and behaviour. Markdown is a lightweight plain-text format that marks headings, lists, links and emphasis with simple symbols, so it is easy to read, edit and reuse in documentation, notes and AI prompts.
Does URL to Markdown work on JavaScript websites?
Only partly. For a URL, the tool reads the HTML exactly as the server sends it and does not run JavaScript, so a page that builds its content in the browser can look almost empty. Open the page, copy the rendered HTML from your browser's developer tools (Copy outerHTML on the html tag), and use the Paste HTML tab.
Can I convert a page behind a login to Markdown?
Not from a URL, because the tool can only fetch public pages. While you are logged in, copy the page's HTML from the developer tools and paste it into the Paste HTML tab. The pages you convert are not stored on our side.
Is this HTML to Markdown converter free?
Yes, it is free with no signup. Pages up to about 3 MB and pasted HTML up to about 2 MB are supported, and each visitor can run a limited number of conversions in a short period to prevent abuse.
