Real XML Sitemap Generator example: before vs. after

A new site with no sitemap vs. one submitted to Google Search Console, ready for faster indexing.

Before · No sitemap.xml
GET /sitemap.xml
404 Not Found

# Google Search Console:
# "Sitemap could not be read"

New and updated pages rely entirely on internal links and Google's own crawl schedule to be discovered, which can take weeks for a large site.

After · sitemap.xml generated
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/</loc>
    <lastmod>2026-01-14</lastmod>
  </url>
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/blog/new-post</loc>
    <lastmod>2026-01-14</lastmod>
  </url>
</urlset>

Submitted in Google Search Console, giving crawlers a direct, reliable list of every page instead of relying on discovery alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sitemap.xml file and do I need one?
A sitemap.xml lists every important URL on your site so search engines can discover pages faster, especially new pages, pages with few internal links, or a site with thousands of URLs. It doesn't guarantee indexing, but it removes discovery as a bottleneck.
Where do I submit my sitemap to Google?
In Google Search Console, under Sitemaps, enter your sitemap URL (yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) and submit. You can also reference it in your robots.txt file with a Sitemap: line so other crawlers find it automatically.
How often should I regenerate and resubmit my sitemap?
Whenever you add, remove, or significantly restructure pages. For a site that publishes regularly, monthly is a reasonable baseline. Google also re-crawls a submitted sitemap periodically on its own, so resubmission isn't required for every single change.
Why are some of my pages missing from the generated sitemap?
This tool builds the sitemap from your site's existing sitemap.xml or discoverable pages. Pages blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex, or not linked from anywhere on your site won't be picked up, those exclusions usually need fixing at the source, not in the sitemap itself.
